Michèle Ramsay (PhD) is director of the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB), Professor in Human Genetics, and South African Research Chair in Genomics and Bioinformatics of African Populations at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. While being deeply committed to promoting research excellence in Africa and contributing to research that accurately represents African populations in global science, she actively promotes capacity strengthening in the fields of genomics and precision medicine. As a founding member of the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) consortium Ramsay leads the AWI-Gen Collaborative Centre to investigate genomic and environmental contributions to cardiometabolic diseases and traits in an older adult cohort across four sub-Saharan countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa). Michèle is co-chair of the International Human Cohorts Consortium (IHCC) and steering group member for the development of a blueprint for the African Population Cohorts Consortium (APCC). As a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Group for Genomics (TAG-G) she contributes LMIC perspectives to global genomics, promoting ethical, equitable and fair principles and practices. She serves as chair of the Academy of Science of South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information (POPIA) Committee to draft a national Framework for Research to promote a uniform interpretation of the Act.
